Due to a significant shortage of qualified nurses in the area, Florida medical facilities are working hard to hire top-notch professionals from all around the state. Many facilities in the largest regions of Florida are offering sign-on bonuses to attract the best nursing school graduates and long-time professionals. Thanks to this new boom in the nursing industry, Florida nursing schools are brimming with student applications. Support organizations are working just as hard to make sure professionals, patients, and students find their professional home in the state.
The Florida Nurses Association is one of the oldest nursing resources in the state, with the foundation of today’s association being laid in 1909. Part of the American Nurses Association, the FNA is supportive of all nursing specialties and works with special interest groups to further the agenda of the nursing profession in Florida. It also works toward collective bargaining activities for nurses employed in the state, with representatives available for individual nurse support.
Among the support provided by the FNA is the Florida Nurses Foundation, which helps to “promote nursing and delivery of healthcare through the advancement of research, education, and practice.” Nursing school students are eligible for grants and scholarships from the foundation, which was formally established in 1983. For students attending classes, the Florida Nursing Student Association provides information and assistance through their website and organization activities. Many of the resources available on the FNSA website can answer questions for those considering a career in nursing.
The regulatory agency for the nurse profession in the state of Florida is the Florida Board of Nursing. The Florida Board of Nursing provides online access to regulations, frequently asked questions and other services. Students and professionals can visit or call the board for information about applying for licenses, continuing education credits, education programs, professional publication information, and more.
About the State of Florida
Florida has a population of about 19 million people, making it the 4th most populous state in the country. With a subtropical climate and abundant natural resources, the state is an attractive area for residents and vacationers, alike. Most of the state is on or near a coast line, either on the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean. “Floridians” are accustomed to heavy rains in the summer and mild winters, with very few nights of freezing temperatures in the greater part of the state.
Florida was once home to Paleo-Indians and early Spanish settlers. As the first area of the U.S. to be visited by European explorers, Florida is also home to a history rich in triumph and conquest for early settlers. Conquistador Ponce de Leon was among the first Europeans to visit the area, but he was not the last. Some areas were conquered several times, leading to diverse cultural histories. Along the path to today’s Florida are stories of economic disparity and bloody battles. Until the 20th century, the state was the least populated state in the South. (Today, Florida’s population ranks it the 2nd most populous state in the south, following Texas.)
